What are Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors?
Eigenvalues (λ) and eigenvectors (v) are fundamental concepts in linear algebra, particularly important for understanding linear transformations. The Characteristic Equation: Finding Eigenvalues
To find the eigenvalues of a matrix A, we rearrange the eigenvalue equation Av = λv into a form that allows us to solve for λ. Since v is a non-zero vector, we can write Av - λv = 0, which can be further expressed as (A - λI)v = 0, where I is the identity matrix of the same size as A. For this equation to have a non-zero solution for v, the matrix (A - λI) must be singular, meaning its determinant must be zero.
- The characteristic equation is derived from the condition that the system (A - λI)v = 0 has non-trivial solutions (i.e., v ≠ 0). This occurs if and only if the matrix (A - λI) is not invertible.

- A is the original square matrix.
- λ is the eigenvalue we are trying to find.
